KATIE RAFFERTY

COMPANY MEMBER

Hometown: Trevose, PA

University: University of the Arts in PA

Years With GDC: 10

Katie began her training at Kay’s Act II dance studio in Trevose, PA, in addition to summer sessions at the Rock School of the Pennsylvania Ballet. Wanting to continue studying all styles of dance, Katie went on to attend the University of the Arts under a Promising Artists scholarship. She graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Jazz Dance, and was awarded the Outstanding Jazz Dance Performance by faculty. While attending Uarts, Katie was a member of the Xhale Dance Company for four seasons under the direction of Michael Susten, and had the opportunity to perform in the Philly Fringe Festival and New York City Choreographers Canvas.  Katie looks forward to returning to Philly every year to perform as a dancer in the 6abc Thanksgiving Day Parade, under Robbie Mackey’s direction and choreography.

After graduation, Katie joined Giordano II, working her way to Performing Associate, and is now in her seventh season in the main company. She is ecstatic to be entering her tenth season in the organization with a new role as rehearsal captain and looks forward to continuing to grow each year.

One of the highlights she has in her time with the organization is being a part of GDC’s Jazz Dance/Science & Health program where she is able to teach children about dance, health and fitness. Going on her tenth year teaching for the program, she has the pleasure of being a part of change in under-resourced elementary schools and loves seeing the positive energy and confidence it can bring to each classroom.

In high school, Katie developed a passion for teaching and is grateful to continue to share that passion to her students at the Joffrey Academy and All About Dance, as well as the greater Chicago area teaching master classes and setting choreography. She has the pleasure of mentoring aspiring dancers as a part of the Giordano Mentorship Program, and loves building relationships with these young artists, helping them on their journey. Katie is certified in all five levels of NGCP® for the Giordano Technique and is inspired more than ever to continue spreading the Giordano legacy to the next generation of dancers across the world.
